Caption: Between the years 1945 and 1992 the United States government conducted 1,030 nuclear tests. 210 were classified as atmospheric tests, 815 were detonated underground, and 5 were exploded underwater. 804 underground tests were detonated at the Nevada Test Site (NTS).

The image above is from a test called “Baneberry” which had a yield of ten kilotons (a kiloton is the equivalent of 1,000 tons of TNT). The nuclear bomb was buried about 900 feet beneath the surface of Yucca Flat near the northern boundary of the NTS. The radiation release or venting resulted in a cloud of radioactive dust that reached an altitude of 10,000 feet. Following the Baneberry venting, new containment procedures were adopted to prevent similar occurrences.

“(4:35) The results of Plowshare work in controlling and limiting the rate of radioactivity released by a nuclear explosion have been and continue to be highly encouraging.

Scientists have already determined that when a nuclear explosives are buried at a depth that will produce the biggest crater, a major part of the radioactivity is swallowed up in the rubble of the crater. But the most promising results have been gained by improving the design of the explosive itself and by improving emplacement techniques. Both of these specifically calculate to reduce the release of radioactivity.

In the 1962 Sedan event, for example, only a small fraction of the radioactivity produced by the explosion was released to the atmosphere. If Sedan were conducted with the improved design and techniques available today (1965), there would be even less radioactivity and more reduction is still expected. A hundred-fold reduction from the radioactivity levels from 1962 through more improvement in explosive design and emplacement techniques.

When this prediction is realized, it will mean that the main limitation of nuclear excavation projects will not be radiation. It will be other potential hazards of explosions, nuclear or conventional: the ground shock, the air blast, and the dust cloud (6:22 min).”

Pyrocumulonimbus cloud – Wikipedia

The pyrocumulonimbus cloud (pyroCb) is a type of cumulus cloud formed above a source of heat such as a wildfire. [..] It is the most extreme manifestation of pyrocumulus. According to the American Meteorological Society’s Glossary of Meteorology, a pyrocumulus is “a cumulus cloud formed by a rising thermal from a fire, or enhanced by buoyant plume emissions from an industrial combustion process.” Analogous to the meteorological distinction between cumulus and cumulonimbus, the pyrocumulonimbus is a fire-aided or –caused convective cloud but with considerable vertical development. The pyroCb reaches the upper troposphere or even lower stratosphere and may involve precipitation (although usually light), hail, lightning, extreme low-level winds, and in some cases even tornadoes.

Pyrocumulus cloud – formation

A pyrocumulus, or literally fire cloud, is a dense cumuliform cloud associated with fire or volcanic activity.

A pyrocumulus is similar dynamically in some ways to a firestorm, and the two phenomena may occur in conjunction with each other. However, one may occur without the other.

Formation

A pyrocumulus cloud is produced by the intense heating of the air from the surface. The intense heat induces convection which causes the air mass to rise to a point of stability, usually in the presence of moisture. Phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and occasionally industrial activities can induce formation of this cloud. The detonation of a nuclear weapon in the atmosphere will also produce a pyrocumulus in the form of a mushroom cloud which is made by the same mechanism. [..]

Appearance

Pyrocumulus is often grayish to brown in color, because of the ash and smoke associated with the fire. It also tends to expand because the smoke and the ash involved in the cloud’s formation increase the amount of condensation nuclei.
